Rugby. The Junior Boys Cup Rugby team hosted St Mary's Drogheda in the first round of the Duff Cup on Monday afternoon. Led by team captain Reuben this was always going to be a tough challenge against a strong looking Drogheda outfit.
Wilson's made the better start with Daniel, Tom and Jorge making some fine inroads into the Drogheda defence. Drogheda stood firm and eventually, against the run of play got a try of their own out on the left wing. It was not converted.
Wilson's replied straight away with tries from Matthew and Daniel. A third try was added before half time through fullback Marco who was superb all afternoon. Half time score 17-5 to Wilson's who would play into a stiff breeze in the second half.
The first score after half time was crucial and it luckily came the way of Wilson's. Alvaro and another one from Matthew eased the pressure and despite a late resurgence from St Mary's, Wilson's had done more than enough to see them home. Final score 31-17.
The platform for this excellent win was set by the pack. Jorge, Matthew B and Nathan were excellent up front and constantly carried with purpose. In the backs Tom was excellent with his distribution, allowing Jorge, Alvaro and Daniel constantly run at space and trouble the St Mary's defence. Round Two next week.

Rugby. The First Year Boys Rugby team made 7 wins out of 7 with a 64-12 demolition of Mt Temple.
Rowland and Elliott were again fantastic at 9 and 10, shepherding the team around the pitch and setting up try scoring opportunities. Charlie led the line out superbly and was named Man of the Match at the end of the game for his efforts! Mark and Finn also worked hard in the forwards, while Michael and William were at the heart of everything positive in the back line.
Try scorers on the day were Sam (3), Jude (3), Joel (2) and 1 each for Michael and William. Michael also added 5 conversions with Ignacio and Rowland adding one each. Well done to the First Years on a great win. Next week they host Clongowes Wood in what should be a tough test.
The Second Year Boys Rugby team also won up in Mt Temple. Having been 28-15 down at half time they managed to regroup and win the game 30-28. Try scorers on the day were Matthew C (3), Matthew B, Daniel and Eddie 1 each. Mateo was named man of the match with a fantastic display at scrum half.
Wilson’s Senior Cup Rugby Team had a fantastic win in the Cup today. They hosted St Patrick’s Classical School, Navan who we have developed a great rivalry with down through the years. There are more photos on the school's Facebook page.
The wind played a large factor in this game and Wilson’s played into it in the first half. Some excellent carries from the forwards in the early exchanges gave Wilson’s excellent field position. St Pat’s were quick on the pitch and managed to turn over the ball from Wilson’s ruck four times in the opening 15 minutes. A lot of the hard work was undone by some sloppy rucking.
David, Joe and Nathan continued to carry well and helped the team settle into the game. Wilson’s territory and possession paid off 20 minutes into the first half with David going over for a try after several phases of pick and go. Just before half time Wilson’s doubled their advantage, again through David (who was outstanding throughout). The half time score was 12-0.
The key score of the game came five minutes into the second half through Alex. Some strong carrying again by the pack gave us good field position. Some patient build-up work from Ben and Sam eventually resulted in Alex squeezing over from close range. Sam added the conversion from way out. Score 19-0.
Navan, to their credit, rallied well and held on to the ball for the next 10 minutes. Eventually they got the score they deserved after multiple phases resulted in their flanker going over under the posts.
The final score of the game came from Michael. Some great build up play from Oisin, Barry and Conor allowed Michael to dot the ball down opportunistically on the line. Sam added the extras to leave the final score 26-7.
This was a fantastic team performance with many players stepping up and playing above the level they had been performing at this year to date. Joe, Jack, Jerry and Barry were outstanding up front both in defence and attack. In the backs Thomas and Evan Hr. cleaned up a lot of first ball while Evan Ha. was dangerous going forward and stopped a certain try in the first half with an excellent tackle. Eoin and Harry were also excellent. Man of the Match goes to Joe who was brilliant in the lineout and with the ball in hand today.
Next up is St Ciaran’s, Kells who got a by into the second round of the cup. They travel to Wilson’s next Wednesday. Thank you to all of the supporters who added to the game.
