The extra curricular events schedule continues this week as per last week's timetable.

Monday 10th September

Rugby. On Monday evening WHS senior boys development team got their rugby season off to a positive start with an excellent 12-10 win over Longford RFC under 17s.

Longford dominated the early exchanges and found themselves 10-0 ahead inside 20 minutes. Longford’s large pack were gaining ground with every carry despite some great tackling from Andrew, Micheal and Ola. The stiff breeze made it very hard for WHS to get out of their half and had to rely on Joe and Dillion running the ball from deep to make any meaningful ground.

The second half was a much closer affair. Jenson, Walter and Andrew gave Wilson’s great field position eventually allowing Sean to dive over from close range. 10-5 with 15 minutes remaining.

Some excellent territory kicks from Evan and Sam began to pin Longford back late in the second half. Finally the pressure told when sub Owen found a crack in the Longford line and showed great pace to get to the line ahead of the onrushing defence. Sam added the conversion and WHS held on for a narrow win.

Luke, Santos and Evan were excellent defensively in the backs while Scott, Herry and Reuben put in big shifts in the forwards. Man of the match was number 8 Andrew. Special mention to Glen who came on in the second half to make his rugby debut.

Rugby. WHS Senior Boys and Junior Boys rugby teams continued their early season preparation with a trip to Garbally College, Ballinasloe.

Both teams were beaten in good competitive games with plenty of players getting valuable game time. Top performers for the Seniors were Alex, Sam and Santos while Matthew B, Ross and Max were excellent for the Juniors.

Both teams have a break from games next week but will be working very hard on the training pitch as they turn their focus to the league which starts the following week v Templeogue College.
