Tuesday 3rd October.
Rugby. The 1st & 2nd Year Boys Team had a home fixture against Mullingar RFC.
Basketball. The Girls Team was in action today in Tullamore. Unfortunately they lost by a single point.
Soccer. It was a much improved Girls U17 Selection from Wilson's that took on local heroes the Real Swans FC U17. The Swans came out to play under the bright lights of Wilson's on the back of a 16- 1 victory the previous weekend. They did not find the Wilson's girls an easy opposition.
A score of nil all at half time was encouraging to both sides. A goal from a free kick put the Swans ahead and they nicked another goal just at full-time.
Overall Wilson's put up an excellent showing. Leah and Kayla were impressive but Corinna, Evelyn, Eunice, Leonie, Natalia and Jennifer in goal all showed great form. Younger players such as Aobhínn and Chidera also got a run-out and did well.
Referee Mr McCormack was most impressed at the high standard of football on display and it was a great exercise for the Wilson's girl’s forthcoming Cup campaigns at Senior and Minor U15 level.
Dragons and Dungeons. A group of pupils met in the library this afternoon to take part in an activity called "Dragons and Dungeons" which involves solving a series of clues given to them and trying to fullfil various tasks and achievements. Just one of the wide variety of activities taking place in Wilson's.
Wednesday 4th October.
Hockey. The Senior A Girls team had an away Leinster League fixture against the Sacred Heart, Tullamore Which they won 3-0. They had an awesome defensive line lead well by Sheena who cleared all of the balls that were in her way. The forwards and mid-players performed their best with goals from Emily, Lorainne and Roisín. The match was a great success and a wonderful way to start the new hockey season.
Rugby. The Junior Boys rugby team played their first competitive home game yesterday and came up against strong opposition in the form of last years’ Cup Winners - Scoil Clonglais from Baltinglass.
The first half was very competitive with both teams working extremely hard in testing conditions. The game remained scoreless for the first 20 minutes. John, Harry and Jeffery led the defensive line for Wilson's. The pressure eventually told and some soft tackling in mid field saw the Clonglais No. 10 slide in for the first try. Wilson's response was immediate and Al Amin took advantage of a mix up in the opposition to score his first try of the season. The final play of the half saw Scoil Clonglais score under the posts to leave the half time score 14-7.
Wilson's were slower out of the blocks in the second half and paid the price conceding two tries in the opening 5 minutes. To their credit they responded positively and held possession for long periods but the Clonglais defence remained resolute. As the Wilson's players tired they conceded three further tries late in the half to leave the final score 47-7. The game was much more competitive than the scoreline suggests. In attack Ben, Rodrigo and Micheal did very well. Wilson's star player on the day was Harry who put in a massive defensive effort.
The juniors will be looking to bounce back next week when we welcome Newpark to WHS. Kick off 2.30.
Thursday 5th October.
Basketball. The Senior Boys had a home fixture this morning, unfortunately meeting a much stronger team.
Hockey. The 1st & 2nd Year Boys and the U16 Boys teams have home fixtures against Temple Carraig school. The 1st and 2nd Years took the lead through a great goal from Daniel early in the game. Unfortunately Temple Carraig equalised before half time and their greater experience lead to two more goals in the second half. Despite the loss we had great performances from Eoin, Jamie, Eddie and Ross.
That was followed by the Junior game. Temple Carraig started the stronger but Wilson's were kept in the game with some great goal keeping from Mark and defending from Craig. Cole was a constant threat to the Temple Carraig defence when we cointer attacked. Temple Carraig took the lead in the second half. This only spurred us on to put in greater effort which led to an equalising goal from Alex. He also got the winner with two minutes left in the game. Great performances from the team.
Sunday 8th October.
Equestrian. Two teams from Wilson’s competed today in the Interschools Show Jumping in Mullingar Equestrian Centre. There were 20 teams in total competing in their competition (4 on each team) and only three teams had zero faults. This included the two Wilson’s teams and a team from St Finians. Two competitors from each team had to compete in a speed round of six jumps. St. Finians won by a whisker despite a brilliant performance by both Wilson’s teams. Wilson’s were delighted to win their prizes of rosettes, trophies and medals for 2nd and 3rd places. A very successful day all round! Congratulations to both teams.
Team 1 - Florentin, Emma, Maria, Harry
Team 2 - Sasha, Marlena, Rachel, Elle Anna
