Basketball. Congratulations to the Junior Boys squad who won the Midlands School 2nd Year C Plate Final in Portlaoise today. Wilson’s Hospital School played Moate Community School. It was a very close game which Wilson’s won in the end.
WHS started the match quite unfocused and ended up losing the first quarter 14-8. After a talk from the coach, Jonusas, Wilson's woke up and brought the game back on to level playing field. The first half ending 20-14 to Moate CS. Wilson's were still trailing behind by six points.
During the second half the Wilson’s team got used to Moate’s tempo and playing style and began to steadily taking the lead. Tobe and team captain Jamie both contributed heavily towards the comeback. Duval displayed great skills with the ball and helped with the movement around court. Alpha scored an essential basket to secure the win. The final score was 26-33 to Wilson's.
Congratulations to the following players: Jamie (Captain), Tobe, Duval, Kwaku, Alpha, Eoghan, Oisin, Daniel, Samuel, Stephen and Audrius Jonusas (Coach), Stephan and Shalom.
Wednesday 3rd April.
Rugby. Our Senior Girl’s rugby team travelled to Dublin to play Kings Hospital. We finished the game on the wrong side of the score-line losing by a narrow margin of 6 tries to 8. However, there were a huge number of positives that could be taken from the game. Travelling without our Transition Year girls who are enjoying themselves in London this week we had six debutants to the Senior team with three of the girls playing their first ever game of Rugby.
Aoibh, Maria, Alex, Ruth, Elena and Ruth all stepped up to the pace of Senior rugby and contributed to the game. Both Ruth’s scored tries for the team and Maria, Aoibh and Alex helped to keep the Kings Hospital strike runners under control with some fantastic tackling and rucking. Maria in particular was a stand-out performer when it came to making important tackles. Ruth who was playing against her former teammates also saved Wilson’s on a few occasions when she bundled some of the KH players over the side line before they had the chance to touch down the ball.
The existing players on the team also performed really well, Emma worked tirelessly in both attack and defence distributing the ball into space and making key tackles when needed. Ellen made some very strong carries and broke through the defence to score for the team. Avril, Isa, Roisin and Ellen were as always very solid when given the ball and made ground with every carry. The girls will be back on the rugby pitch on Monday in preparation for a blitz in Birr Rugby club next Tuesday 9th April when both Senior and Juniors will represent the school again.
