Sports & Extra Curricular Events 28th January - 3rd February 2019

Monday 28th January

Rugby: The Senior Boys Rugby Team had a home fixture against The High School.

Wednesday 30th January.

Basketball. The Junior Boys and the Junior Girls Bastketball teams have matches today in Mountrath.

Soccer. A thrilling game saw Wilson’s Senior Boys team come out the right side of a 5-4 score line in a home fixture against Beneavin. Before the came there was a mammoth effort to clear the snow off the pitch – many thanks to the boys who did that great job.

It was a quiet first half with Wilson’s leading 1-0 at the break thanks to a calm finish by Jorge. The first half was also notable for a heavy knock received by our goalkeeper Shalom, who had to be replaced with only 20 minutes on the clock (thankfully he made a full recovery!) In the second half, Wilson’s came out all guns blazing and soon had a 4-1 lead thanks to goals from Alvaro, a Pablo 30 metre free kick and a penalty converted by Jorge after Stefan was upended in the box. Beneavin however weren’t done and there were earlier warning signs as stand in keeper Javier made some outstanding saves to keep our lead intact. There wasn’t much he was able to do as they scored twice in quick succession which made for a nervous final ten minutes. The pressure was mounting on the Wilson’s goal but thanks to a quick breakout and a well taken finish by Alvaro for his second, the points looked secure. In fairness to Beneavin they never gave up and they managed to score again but luckily it was little more than a consolation.
A great effort by all the boys for the victory (3 or 4 had suffered from cramp before the final whistle) as Beneavin were a strong, determined, no nonsense team.
Man of the Match: Javier

Hockey. The Juniors Girls team were to have a match against Loreto Mullingar this afternoon but the snow covered pitch lead to a postponement..

Rugby. The Senior Boys rugby team travelled to Bird Avenue in Dublin to play CUS in the Forster Cup. It was a good day at the office with what was a young senior team running out 53-5 winners.

First half tries from David (2), Santos and Ben were added to in the second half by Evan, Harry and David (2). Ben added 5 conversions and an early penalty to cap a fine individual performance.

The pack all played well with Oisin, Michael and Joe earning special mentions. In the backs Owen, Evan and Ben Q all had fine games.
