Tuesday 22nd January
Rugby. Our First Year boys rugby team travelled to Edenderry RFC for a friendly fixture. This was the second time this team had met with the first meeting being a close encounter in September.
The first half was a close affair with both teams scoring tries. Samuel, Ciaran and Mark carried the ball very well - creating space for the backs. Joel got two tries in the first half and Michael (who was excellent throughout) kicked 2 conversions. Edenderry responded with a try of their own leaving the half time score 14-7.
Wilson's made a few changes at half time and the fresh legs made an immediate impact. Sam, William and Michael Scored tries early on to pull Wilson's clear. Edenderry did respond with two tries of their own to set the game up nicely going into the final quarter. Tries from Sam, William, Elliott and Joel late in the game sealed a good win for the First Years. The final score was 56-30.
In the forwards, Kevin, Edward, Finn and Alpha worked very hard and carried the ball to good effect. In the backs William, Jude and James caused the opposition trouble any time they got the ball in space. Man of the Match was Michael who played extremely well at out-half.
Wednesday 23rd January.
Hockey. It was an incredibly cold day but the Minor A Girls team kept warm with plenty of running against Loreto, Beaufort. It was disappointing to lose but we were facing one of the strongest teams in the group. In today's game Chidera played amazingly well in goals. She always delivers when it comes to holding down a good deference of the goals. Two great defenders today were Leila in centre back andAlice in sweeper. Leila did many great hit outs which gave us a few great chances up the pitch. Robyn had a great game up front. She was very fast and full of energy throughout the whole game and also did some good runs up the wing. The final score was 0-5.
The Junior Girls team played a very good game agents St. Columba's College . They played a very strong defensive match and only let in two goals despite numerous attacks on our goal and flurry of short corners awarded against us in the second half. It was also Sadbh's first time in goals and she did very well. Elizabeth and Kaia played key roles in pushing back the oncoming players. It was due to the great teamwork put on by all of the backs that helped them keep the solid defence. Roisin, new to hockey this year, played very well in midfield helping bring the ball up the pitch several times. Our team captain, Ruth, showed great leadership by putting huge energy into the game and throwing herself at every single 50-50 ball. This is one of the best matches they have played all year and we look forward to seeing their skills continue to improve.
Rugby. The Junior Boys team have an away fixture against Kilkenny College.
The Senior Boys Rugby team played St Conleth's in the first round of the Harry Gale cup. St Conleth's had the better of the early exchanges and went 3-0 ahead thanks to a well taken penalty from their no 10. It took WHS a while to get going. Eventually they breached the Conleth's line off a trick play well executed by Conor. This left the half time score 7-3.
Wilson's came out a renewed team in the second half and scored an early try through Ben W. Some excellent build up play from Jack and Alex allowed Ben to get over from close range. Conor added two more tries to his total to put a clear gap between the teams. Ben W added another one late in the game to add to his four conversions. The final score was 33-3 to Wilson's.
In the pack - Harry, Michael and Barry had good games, particularly in the second half. Ben controlled things well from scrum half while Santos, Evan and Denians always looked a treat from first phase and counter attack ball. The extra support that Wilson’s had from pupils from Rathowen National School made a great difference to the gamer – thank you to them all!
Next week Wilson's host CUS in the same competition.
Thursday 24th January.
Athletics. Students represented Wilson's at the North Leinster Schools Cross Country competition today.
Badminton.Well done to the U19 boys and U19 girls badminton teams who represented Wilsons Hospital School on the 24th January at the Leinster Badminton Finals in Baldoyle, Co. Dublin.
First up to play were the girls who played their hearts out against two very strong teams in Division 3, unfortunately losing out on their place in the finals after these games. Well done to Emily, Evelyn, Eunice and Emma for their excellent performances on the court! Isoken was the team sub on the day.
Representing the boys in Division 2 were Toch, Jefferson, Sam and Shalom. The boys also played two teams and displayed great skill on the court. Unfortunately they were defeated by both teams. A special thank you to Joshua who travelled with the team to referee games and assist the teams. Keep up the good work guys!
